Global Search Program - Where's the Big Bird Series
This series of works is also dedicated to the concern for the human living environment. “If the animals are all gone, how far can humans go?” In today’s world, many species of living organisms are going extinct every day, arguably due to humans’ insatiable desire to take and destroy. “Global Search Program – Where is the Big Bird?” revolves around the search for birds and extends it to our need to find other missing animal companions, in hopes of reuniting all living things in one big family, to enjoy peaceful cohabitation, as well as protecting and maintaining the quality and safety of our living environment on earth.
When the news of the missing Malaysian plane broke out, Zhu Wei’s works incorporated the missing MH370 aircraft, the idea of searching for birds then took on an additional meaning of looking for the aircraft, or the “big bird”, this is a way for the artist to pay homage and express compassion to the passengers who passed away, as well as a tribute for humanity in a time of great tragedy.
“Flying Man, Walking Bird” is a piece that also shares this sentiment. Humans are flying in the sky, while birds are walking underneath, which creates a reversal of roles between man and bird. This raises the question of whether we should continue to go against the natural way of things or retreat to a more primitive state– perhaps humans should return to the ground and let birds rule the sky, so that earth can have a chance to recover and return to its original glory.
